Now I understand why Alan Moore hated the film version of Watchmen so much...it's a piece of crass, moronic S&M bullshite, a three-hour waste of a great story, a toxic shlockfest that sickens the soul. That's three hours I'll never get back. If you've managed to miss it, you're lucky; keep right on doing that. I wish I had.

But I've been a bit of a fan of Elle Fanning ever since "Phoebe In Wonderland".
Excellent performance in a very good film.

Never seen it. She was great in Super 8 though.

Saw Django Unchained at the cinema today. Excellent stuff, Tarantinon on ripper form and pure cinema. It's f*****g violent, though, gotta be the single bloodiest movie I have seen in donkeys years!

La Belle Verte [The Beautiful Green] - a delightful change from all those nightmare dystopian visions of the future, and a hilarious commentary on the current state of things. Loved it to bits. I want to live there...

Yes, great movie. Quentin brings even the best out in DiCaprio.

Yesterday I saw "The Impossible". Very impressive movie! And yes there was a tear!

Winter's Bone is a tough, laconic film about poor people in a hard, cold place. [The book is even tougher, though it's also oddly lyrical]. In a way, although I wanted more, it's a good job it's so short - 59 minutes - because it's a short novel, too, and the film sticks as close to it as you could possibly expect.

Lawrence and Hawkes are completely believable as Ree Dolly and her Uncle Teardrop, and the supporting cast, many of them locals, also put not a foot wrong. There are no gun-battles or scenery-chewing histrionics, it's much more like a European than a Hollywood film [that's a compliment], but it's also tense, tightly-scripted and compelling, and often moving, too. Well worth a look, and so's the book - but turn up the volume, or you'll miss a lot of the naturalistically muttered dialogue.

I hope Lawrence gets out of the blockbusters soon, and returns to this kind of film-making [I have zero interest in The Hunger Games or X-Men or blah blah blah].

Hunger Games was quite good, really, much to my surprise.

Sure, it's a Hollywood film, but looks pretty good, and Ms Lawrence got another oscar nom for it (not that that necessary counts for much). Got great reviws too! I haven't yet, but probably will as soon as it's out on dvd.

I understand completely what you mean about the volume on Winter's bone, some dialogs were hard to follow.
Think I need to rewatch it now, after I upgraded my home theater last month. From nothing to at least decent.

Worth the rewatch anyway, supurb film all around.

I haven't seen Silver Lining Playbook, Dahls, but I'll remember the recommendation should I come across it. I'm on my third read of the Winter's Bone book, too, and have another Woodrell on order.

Thanks to Katka's post in an old thread, watched Pusinky (thanks, Katka!). Liked it, a lot. Similar realistic, no-nonsense look at young people's formative time as in FÅ or NdP, and I just loved the grungy Eastern Europe aesthetics and milieu. Took me back to the times when I travelled around there.

Saw Lincoln today.
Great film, as I expected. Daniel Day-Lewis' got to be one of, if not the, best character actors in cinema history!
