Saw Attack the Block last night. An intermittently amusing if unremarkable comedy-horror.

It's a British comic-horror about nasty aliens who end up in a fight to the death with a bunch of teenage hoodies. They picked the wrong London council estate to invade! :P

Sounds like the perfect scenario for a great film, so what went wrong?

People keep comparing l'Acquart with Charlotte Gainsbourg in "L'Effrontée", and i guess, having seen a bit of it on YT, that there is a certain something in common, especially in the way they both totally inhabit the characters. I'd like to see the whole thing now [YT censored one of the parts  ]

So then I watched her in 'The Cement Garden', an Ian McEwan story [so I should have known it'd be disturbing], and, yep...it seriously is.

Might have to unzip the Fish fortune and make a couple of purchases.
But first, I know Kyle likes Hanna med H, but Dave, I'd like to know if you can recommend the two Gainsbourg films for a sensitive soul like me. 8)

L'Effrontée can be considered a companion [or sister] piece to FA/SML and WL/NdP, a coming-of-age story with a charismatic outsider at the centre. {Umm, so to speak  ]

The Cement Garden is a heavier number all round, a suffocating descent into, well, you have to see it for yourself really. La Gainsbourg is excellent in both.

Added them to my "must buy" list. ^O^

Reported on "Hipsters" a while back. Excellent Russian film set in 1955 Moscow. Comedy Musical about young people craving American jazz/swing/rock. Excellent film with a brilliant performance by the gorgeous Oksana Akinshina (Lilya-4-ever).

Well, had it recorded on my IQ's hard disk so I watched it again. Loved it just as much as last time.
Russian with English subs.
Highly recomended. *:)*

Not only but also..... "4.3.2.1."

4 girls, 3 days, 2 cities, 1 story.
Comedy/drama as only the English can.

Tells of a diamond theft which complicates the lives of four girls, who have enough issues of their own without that thank you very much.
Same story four times through different eyes, filling in all the gaps as it goes roaring along.
Also a great chance to play "spot who's been in Dr Who".
Written, produced and directed by Noel Clarke for all the Mickey Smith fans out there.

Here's a clip and some reviews from "At the Movies" on ABC TV Australia. (Margaret liked it, David was a bit not so. Don't listen to him, it was great.

80 egunean (For 80 Days)

Image

Saw this few days ago, and I must say that I liked it. A lot.

From the film's website:

Axun, a 70 year old woman, is called from the hospital to take care of her daughter's ex-husband, who was seriously injured in car accident. To her surprise, the woman who takes care of the other patient in the same hospital room turns out to be Maite, her best friend when teenagers. They have not seen each other for more than 50 years. The hospital visits will show that the close relationship they had when teenagers is still alive. Their relationship was very special fifty years ago but nowadays the same feelings flourish. They have fun and enjoy each other's company until Axun finds out that Maite is openly lesbian. Axun questions her own feelings about Maite. Was their relationship when teenagers more than friendship? Where is the thin line that separates friendship from desire? Now that she is 70, does she dare crossing this thin line?

Trailer at the site.

It's nice to see someone, anyone, make a romantic drama with older people.
A rare thing indeed.

Sounds like a really good film.

What the Bleep Do We Know? Very weird doco about quantum physics and its implications for spirituality and what we perceive as "reality". Bizarre.
