They soak up file size like a sponge. The little "Alex drinking wine" gif I posted today was around 8meg.
By far the largest I've made, and likely to remain so forever.

I get the impression that directly translating whole video clips, even short ones, is not really the way to go - it begins to look like a case of choosing a couple of stills from your chosen sequence and doing fades/wipes/whatever between them. Plus the other stuff about reducing image size and colour count. Paint Shop Pro has a .gif-animation plug-in which is pretty good.

I'm sure there are lots of different ways of making great gifs.
Maybe if collectively we try out as many as we can, and share our thoughts on "ease of use", etc., we can arrive at an ideal selection.
