A Wells
A dangerous A -well ?
"Dangerous " manhole checked
Everyone knows that it is bad if you go on a A -well . Now folklorist Frederick Skott learns more about the tradition.
A motorist avoided wells
A motorist in Linköping drove very strange in the morning traffic from the alarm to the police. When the motorist was stopped showed that driving behavior was because the driver wanted to avoid driving on the A- wells, as in a child's play is said to give bad luck.
Event News from Greater Gothenburg
The phenomenon of notions of manhole covers may have occurred in Gothenburg.
Frederick Skott , folklorist at the Institute for Language and Folklore in Gothenburg, during the spring called people's stories of manhole covers .
How has it gone ?
- It has been a huge interest , over 370 responses we have received . Most writing on the wells as a nice childhood memory , but many report that they as adults avoid going to the A- wells. It's like different everyday superstitious - just in case you avoid adding the keys on the table, and it does not feel great if you happen to break a mirror , even if you might not really think it matters.
Which wells have you received most stories about?
- A and K - wells are most common , where A is bad and K are good. K is often interpreted as love, while 'A missed love. The meanings also vary over time , and largely reflects young people's fears and hopes. In the 1950s meant A sometimes corporal punishment , in the 1970s , it could mean, for example unemployed. From the 1990s , we have been stories where A is said to account for AIDS. In total, we received thirty different meanings just for A- wells.
What is it that makes these kinds of traditions arise?
- Basically it's about to understand, explain and deal with things that are incomprehensible and uncontrollable in our lives. Avoiding certain wells is a tradition that has spread among children and is in the borderland between playfulness and seriousness .
What else is there for well letters?
- We have for example the V wells that often stands for friendship. Storm water wells , those with bars across , has been interpreted as that they themselves or a parent would go to jail. Tele Wells said that you would get a phone call.
Is the collection ready now?
- No, we 'd love to involve more stories! Gladly from Gothenburg, and preferably from 40 - and 50's . The earliest stories we received just from Gothenburg, and it would be fun to learn more about that time to possibly find out about when and where this phenomenon occurred. It is very possible that the tradition arose precisely in Gothenburg.
What happens to all the stories submitted ?
- They are stored in our folklore collections. The archive contains already a large number of stories about various folk beliefs from the 1800s onwards. In the future one will be able to visit the archive and read about manholes , in the same way that it currently can share stories of earlier times folklore. I'm also working on an article on the subject.
Do you have any similar projects in the pipeline?
- I would love to explore the phenomenon of love locks. It's about couples engrave their name or initials on a padlock , locks it to a bridge and throw the key into the water as a kind of symbol of eternal love . It is very big on the continent , and also in Stockholm. How prevalent it is here in Gothenburg I do not know .
