Had a bit of a movie day today with the weather being so bad, watched Lake Mungo and Visiting Hours.

Lake Mungo is a mock-documentary Aussie ghost story. A teenage girl drowns at a family outing, and in the weeks and months after her death her family is plagued by strange happenings. Initially promising but ultimately ho-hum.

Visiting Hours. A controversial TV reporter is attacked in her home by a knife-wielding maniac. She is rescued and hospitalized, but her ordeal is far from over as her attacker is determined to finish the job... This is a sometimes oddly paced but fairly effective early 80s thriller with a good cast including Lee Grant and William Shatner. I was rather taken with Linda Purl, who plays a sweet young nurse-come-witness who finds herself on the killer's hit list, and Michael Ironside makes an excellently threatening villain. Not great but pretty decent.

The Hidden. Kyle MacLachlan practically gets to rehearse his Twin Peaks role here as a weirdo FBI agent hunting an alien killer that's jumping from human host to host and leaving a trail of death and destruction in its wake. This cult 80s classic is an outrageously over the top action/sci-fi/horror with plenty of big laughs too. I had an absolute hoot with it - they just don't make 'em like this anymore!

And Soon the Darkness. Two young women are on a cycling holiday in France. They part after a mild tiff, but when one returns for her friend she finds that she seems to have disappeared without a trace... Pamela Franklin and Michele Dotrice (Ooh, Betty!) star in this early 70s suspense thriller written by Brian Clemens and Terry Nation (The Avengers/Doctor Who). Pretty decent actually, and Pamela Franklin was kind of a hottie.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Passable entertainment, they're all the same really, though!

Yeah, it seems to have been a overload of superhero movies the last decade or so, and I mostley manage to avoid them.
I'll watch almost anything with Batman though, which still has somewhat a nostalgic impact.

Saw The Grand Budapest Hotel this afternoon. Very enjoyable. Wasn't sure I was going to take to it at first but it won me over quickly enough and was great fun with a fantastic cast (been ages since I've seen Jeff Goldblum in anything). Still think Royal Tenenbaums is my favourite Anderson flick, but this is still one of his better ones. Very entertaining.

Saw Psycho II last night. After 20 years, Norman Bates is released from the mental hospital back into the community - but there are plenty of people who want to make sure he doesn't stay for long... This 80s classic is a gripping thriller that is shot through with dramatic irony, from the vindictive old woman who still wants revenge on Norman for her sister's murder and is manipulating events to try and drive him crazy again - only to regret it when she finally succeeds, and the fact that there is someone running around killing people who is actually trying to protect Norman, but who actually only succeeds in destabilising him further by making him think he's the one doing it. As the local Sheriff notes at one point, "If Norman Bates is crazy, there are a couple of other people in this town who are running him a close second". Anchoring it all is a terrifically sympathetic performance from Anthony Perkins as a man who is doomed to never escape his demons, no matter how hard he tries. Great film.
