Last Film You Watched

It Follows. This over-hyped horror flick about a teenage girl who catches one hell of an STD - in the form of a monstrous, perpetually pursuing entity that can look like anyone - turns out to be something of a disappointment. There are some effective moments - indeed, pretty much any scene with "It" is pretty freaky and scary, but unfortunately it's the bits in between the monster attacks that leave much to be desired. It's terribly drawn out, and the characters so relentlessly colourless, dreary and non-charismatic that I struggled to maintain much interest until the monster showed up again. Overrated.

I've like Bob Hoskins ever since I saw him in the excellent 1978 TV series Pennies From Heaven.
I was saddened by his passing last year.

Saw Dracula (aka Horror of Dracula) the other day, which I've somehow never seen before. Didn't think I was going to like it at first - doesn't help that the guy playing Harker is a total wet fish - but once it got going and Peter Cushing (and then the great Michael Gough - looking younger than I've ever seen him before!) turned up I started really getting into it and enjoying it. It was obvious within a few minutes that it was a pretty loose adaptation of the book (to put it mildly) but it ended up being the most fast-paced and fun version of Dracula I've ever seen before. Hugely atmospheric and great oldskool spooky fun. Looking forward to the rest of the series now.

Last night watched The Bedroom Window. Steve Guttenberg plays a young man having an affair with his boss's wife, who witnesses an attack on a young woman outside his bedroom window. When another girl is murdered not long after and just a few streets away, they realise the same man is likely responsible but to avoid exposure, he goes to the police as the "witness" instead of her. But when discrepancies cause his story to fall apart, he suddenly finds himself prime suspect - a mistake the real killer is only too happy to reinforce. Average late 80s thriller that starts well but becomes increasingly implausible the longer it goes on.

Saw La piel que habito (The skin I live in) three days ago.
Left such an impression that I had to get a second impression, and watched it again today.

It's a brilliant dark psycological thriller from Spain, staring Antonio Banderas as a mad sociopathic plastic surgeon who's obsessed with creating a new synthetic skin to alter apperances into perfection (you know, doing plastic surgery).

Incredibly creepy and startling, yet so fascinating you can't look away.
Absolutely recommended.

Went to the cinema to see Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation today (for free!). Really enjoyable, loads of great action scenes and suspense set-pieces, all-round great cinema entertainment. This was more like a Bond movie than the Bond movies are these days. Lots of fun.
