I haven't commented on this topic before because my family is far removed from the usual type. I am a sole parent with a disabled son in my care. He just wouldn't understand the film or even have the patience to sit still and see it, but my daughter who lives elsewhere has seen it, borrowed my copy, as well as Bear's Kiss and even Sherdil. We have not discussed any of them in depth but she did offer that she thought Fucking Åmål was "very good". Perhaps we'll discuss it more another day.

i can totally relate to your question, kant. FÅ is on my bookshelve as well and i have played it countless times. It still gives me the feeling like 'damn I wished that had happened to me'. I was younger when the movie came out, we lived in Europe at the time and most people knew what the movie was about. But that extra feeling it gave me... no one else seemed to have that.

Now I still do. I have to admit that I came across this forum this evening and just because of your question (I went: :fucking-A !! she's right on!") I joined. God and i love it already - > although it's so late and I really should go to bed

My first reaction when I saw just the name of the film was exactly the same. Who in the hell is Åmål? Then I saw a picture of Rebecka and I though I have got to see this.

People are different. Some will watch a film only once, ever, no matter how good. Others will watch occasionally, but not often, in case they grow tired of it. I on the other hand can watch a good film (like Fucking Åmål) like, four times in three days and still look forward to seeing it again.

Yes, this is a great question!

I definitely went through the phase the OP described here, back in September '09 when I first saw the film. I was "less effective" at work for at least two weeks because all I could think about was this film, Agnes Ahlberg, and Rebecka Liljeberg. I've never before flipped out about an actress like this, in my several decades on this earth. Nor have I seen a secular film that evoked such a profound emotional response.

But no, unfortunately those of my inner circle would definitely not appreciate this film, and probably would be freaked out to find that I'm so head-over-heels about it (and did I mention Rebecka?). One, because it's foreign. Two, because the original Swedish film title contains the "F-word." Three, because it's got a lesbian character in it. Four, because it could be construed as a high school/teen movie.

So I will continue to enjoy it over and over again, but unless my family or friends start rummaging through my DVD collection, I doubt they will ever find out!
