(deadpan) Yes, I have heard of him. :P

Doctor Who - The Dalek Invasion of Earth. After yesterdays new episode atrocity, I was frankly in need of something to cleanse my palette and remind me I'm a fan of this show, so I slammed in this old one - and it's cracking stuff. It was probably an act of insanity to attempt a story on this scale on a 1960s BBC Saturday tea time budget, but they went and did it anyway - and pretty much pulled it off with just sheer bloody minded conviction. Essentially, of course, this isn't really a vision of the future - it's totally an allegory on what 1960s Britain might have been if the Nazis had won WWII, with the Daleks standing in for them (Christ, you even see a couple of them pointing their plungers upward in a Nazi style salute at one point, in case we'd missed the point! ) and the story is as bleak and grim as you'd expect from such a scenario. At six parts, this one flies by surprisingly quickly, so much so that the final victory seems a little too easy and you wouldn't have minded them going another episode or two to give more time to the heroes' fight back. But that's mere quibbling. The fact is, I watched two DW stories yesterday - and the one made on the cheap in black and white 46 years ago takes a great dump on the one made in 2010. That's both funny and a sad indictment of the state of modern television! :P

Buffy - No Place Like Home. Series 5 really kicks off here with the truth about Buffy's bizarrely-newly-materialised "little sister" Dawn, and the arrival of the devilish Glory. The psychedelic "trance" scene where Buffy wanders around her house and sees the family photos with Dawn fading in and out of existence is just awesome. Fantastic television.

I'm getting the impression you like British comedy, Kyle! :D

Cracker - To Be A Somebody. Extraordinary. Robert Carlisle (in the role that made him famous, at least in the UK) plays Albie, a seemingly normal working class bloke for whom the death of his father is the trigger for five years of pent-up resentment and rage centred around the Hillsborough disaster to explode into a murderous "Class War" rampage. As the body count rises, Manchester Police are desperate to catch the killer... little realising that one of their own is about to become his next victim. One of the best "Cracker" stories, and one of the finest pieces of British crime drama, period. The shocking death of Christopher Eccleston's DCI Bilborough is seared into the minds of everyone who watched it. Still electrifying stuff 16 years on.

Germany vs. Australia at the World Cup...  (Sorry guys, that was cruel )
Admittedly, the red card for Cahill was a joke.

Wasted on me, Dave. I honestly have no idea what you're talking about!

Doctor Who - The Rescue. Highly enjoyable little quickie, a slight breather after the epic Dalek Invasion, but a very entertaining one and an effective introduction for Vicki, who is instantly appealing and likeable (and cute, too :D). Very atmospheric, also, and the final scenes as the Doctor, Ian and Barbara invite Vicki to join the crew are genuinely magical. For a 'quickie', there's a lot to love in The Rescue.

:r  *:|*

I'm sure nobody with any sense here in Oz thought we would actually beat Germany, but a little closer would have been nice. Caught some of the game on TV this morning and I thought your guys played very well. They'll be tough to beat if they can keep that form going.

(I may have to fall back on my German ancestry to find a team to support later in the tournament. :P )

(It's either that or my English ancestry on my mother's side, but I don't want to mention any one all draws with the USA for fear of offending them. :P )

Or, as David Tennant might have said, "New username. That's weird".

Now, I would have felt a bit awkward mentioning this to codyw1 but seeing how this Ian person brought up DT I thought I should let you know that UKTV channel have just finished the last of their ten best DR Who episodes which have been playing for about four hours a day each day over the long weekend.

Not that I watched them all.
Only a couple in fact.
Apparently it was a viewers poll to decide the order.

No. 1 was "Blink". You know, the nasty looking angel statues that can only move when nothing is looking at them, so don't even blink.
I approve their choice.Image

Not bad given that their "all time best" category rather oddly extended only to episodes made since 2005. :T :r *:|*

Babylon 5 season 3 final. Epic stuff.
