Last Film You Watched

Saw Donnie Darko again last night. Excellent. A terrific mix of comedy, drama, love story, 80s nostalgia and weirdo science fiction mystery. A genuine classic. And Jena Malone is just adorable in this.

Donnie Darko is one of my favourite movies of all-time.

Better not discuss the meaning of the movie, because from experience I know that everyone has his/hers own thoughts about that.

Pi, by Aronofsky. Ambitious and daring [if a bit garbled metaphysically] as usual. A geeky young math genius with migraine stumbles on the 216-letter name of God...or something. I liked it anyway, jumpy black'n'white New York filming and a drum'n'bass soundtrack works for me.

I liked his 'The Fountain' too, despite its weepiness, for the amazing deep-space scenes especially [achieved via micrography apparently!]. Again, a slightly garbled ascension fable.

Have yet to see Black Swan, though.

Saw Speed again last night. Classic 90s actioner.

Recorded Black Swan off the TV yesterday but haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

I saw this little film last night, I don't know whether any of you have ever seen it. It was this little Swedish flick from 1998, quite successful in its day, I believe, about two teenage girls falling in love. Show Me Affection, or something, it was called. Or Flaming Amal or something (as named by Alf Stewart).

No, sorry. Seriously, I watched FA again last night, first time in just over 4 years (note to self: Don't leave it that long again, idiot). Still as beautiful as ever. One of my favourite films of all time, directed with understated brilliance and filled with wonderfully naturalistic performances, especially from the two radiant leads. But you knew all that already, didn't you?

I'm collecting films like that. I have four now, including Show Me Amal...Let the Wrong'un In, Water Lollies, and Mincer being the other three.

Soon I hope to find one that doesn't feature a same-sex relationship...

Watched it last night.
What a great film.

Brilliant performances by each of the five main characters.
Barbara Hershey as the mother Erica. Talk about putting the pressure on your child. She was a shocker.
Winona Ryder as Beth, the "retiring" dancer. Nothing like walking in front of a car to get attention, is there?
Vincent Cassel as Thomas, the ballet director. First time I've seen him since "Our Day Will Come" and he played his intense, slightly sleazy role to perfection.
Mila Kunis as Lily, another dancer with designs on the lead role. She'd crawl over your dead body to get what she wanted.
And Natalie Portman was perfection as the neurotic, insecure lead dancer, Nina.

A production of Swan Lake showing all the stresses of trying to be perfect in the world of ballet.
Portman's mental breakdown was sensational, as was the ballet's opening night.
Highly recommended.

Saw My Week with Marilyn last night. Erm... didn't like it much, frankly. Kinda boring. Not to mention pretty pointless. (Perhaps it was always going to be for me. I've never really gotten the whole fascination with Monroe anyway, to be honest...)

I enjoyed Emma's scenes, of course (God, she is so beautiful. Those eyes, that smile, that voice, that thing she does with her eyebrows , that posh, slightly-arch-but-with-a-hint-of-mischief thing she has... now THAT'S sexy! .

The rest of it sent me to sleep, though, pretty much.

Saw the Star Trek reboot last night. Quite good actually. I rather enjoyed it despite my reservations. I liked the new Dr McCoy especially, he was alarmingly like a young DeForest Kelley in ammnerisms, I thought.

Went to the cinema and saw The Hunger Games today. An enjoyable science fiction thriller, albeit for all the comments about how original and satirical it is, a very old idea indeed (and VERY reminiscent of a considerably less bloody Battle Royale!). Good stuff though, I enjoyed it.
