Saw Player today. Not bad, if not really my cup of tea. Alex was good, though - and still so gorgeous.

I thought Player was an adventurous move by Alex, but she played the role so very well.

It is a great shame that she's still relegated to these obscure little things, though. She really should be a much bigger star.

Both yes and no.
I like these little obscure things, as you put it.
Thought Player was a real treat.

But, you're right about her deserving to be in bigger productions as well.
Blondie was one of those I guess. If not critically acclaimed, it was at least big and ambitious.

Unfortunately it seems Sweden is much like the rest of the world in that its film industry is so completely dominated by the big budgets of the US studios that even the excellent films have to play second fiddle in the cinemas, and also in the eyes of the critics. If only locally produced fare wasn't always being compared to it we might be able to judge it on its merits.

I dunno... I mean, to say it's 15 years since FA and Alex is still making a living as an actress and director, and that's pretty impressive. But then you look at someone like Noomi Rapace, and you think "Why can't Alex break through like that? She's good enough, she's pretty enough... WTF is up with these casting directors?!"

Unfortunately it seems Sweden is much like the rest of the world in that its film industry is so completely dominated by the big budgets of the US studios that even the excellent films have to play second fiddle in the cinemas, and also in the eyes of the critics.

Thats half true.
Hollywood blockbusters seems to be easier for capturing the mainstream crowds, which is why it dominates the cinemas.
But, the critics hardly gives them any favoritisme, they get more or less the same treatment as homegrown productions, I belive.
If the film is awful, it'll get butchered, and praised if it's wonderfull, whether it's Scandinavian or from anywhere else in the world. (Although critics is sometimes way off in their review, but thats just different oppinions anyway)
The everyman moviegoer on the other hand, often goes for the blockbuster though, good or bad, it seems.
With the exeption of some exellent films of course. FÅ blew away Titanic both in Norway and Sweden, as you may know.

Noomi might had it easier breaking through in the U.S becouse she has more "action blockbuster appeal" (discovered from Millenium) I guess. Which is why she was cast in such as Prometheus and Sherlock Holmes.

Very rarely in Australia though I'm afraid.
Even the Fox studios in Sydney seem to make US films for the US market, I think it's just cheaper to make them here.

And I think Noomi has just had to w*rk extremely hard to get anywhere, even though the Millennium films were still recent as opposed to 15 years ago as in Alex's case.

Hell, even the smaller Hollywood films get screwed. The Bling Ring - big star with Emma Watson, big director with Sofia Coppola, but a small movie - didn't come to a single cinema in Townsville, let alone my local, so what chance have foreign movies got?!


They've got Grown-Ups 2, though.

Is it really that bad a selection?


Of course the majority of what gets picked here is Hollywoodish, it attracts a bigger crowd and cinemas got to make money as well, but they at least mix it up with homegrown and world wide films, even some "indies".

It's fairly limited - I know in Adelaide there were smaller cinemas in the city that showed the more obscure/foreign stuff, but even the small ones here just seem to play the standard selection.

I know that I was at the local paper running cinema reviews of The Bling Ring, yet not one damn place in the whole of Townsville was showing it! What's the point of that then!?

So I guess the only point is that Alex looks beautiful.
