Looks like she's just been crying...! :shock:

This is the most disturbing image I've seen of the younger Pauline, and it tends to validate a lot of the anxieties I feel for her, in the matter of taking on such a charged role at an early age, and what kind of unwelcome attention it may have brought;

Pauline, cherie! C'est magnifique, la différence.

L'Acquart's burning gaze,
never better seen than here,
never ceases to amaze
or inspire tender fear.

This has probably been said a few times already but for me this is what Fucking amal would have been if the cast and crew just did the opposite of everything in that film.

Pauline is Agnes if Elin teased and wasn't really in love with her. Pauline is the more twisted version of Agnes Basically.

Elin version from Water Lilies (sorry forgot her name) is what Elin would have been if she was a tease and had no feelings for Agnes.

Both films have much alike. thats why they would make a great double bill.

Cheevers4ever - elin's version was called Floriane. I personally don't think that would character Elin was like Floriane. After all is to see her openness. In elin's eyes you can seen her candor and compassion. Yet everything is at Elin shown that even if she hinder, can't help for self and gives way to his true feelings. While Florian is calculate the selfish girl, she always counting in her favor, and uses other people for things that she wants.

The 'Marie' character was certainly shy, awkward, nervous even, but 'twisted'...? Not for me.

It all makes perfect sense; in her situation, I'd be shy, awkward and nervous! This is part of the brilliance of the film, that the viewer gets to [re/]experience the pangs of first love and desire through a 15-year-old girl.

Indeed. Marie doesn't seem much different to Agnes, really. Luckier in a way, in that she does have at least have one good friend, while Agnes is very much isolated.

Yeah, Elin is nothing like Floriane at all. That's kind of the point of her character in a way, in that Elin is perceived by others to be that sort of person, but the perception is very much wrong. Which is one of the reasons why Elin is so frustrated in FA in the beginning, because she knows she's not and doesn't want to be that person but doesn't know how to break away from the view others have of her. Floriane is an empty, vain and pretty callous and nasty person. Elin is anything but.

Ouch! Harsh but fair, Ian?

I gather Celine Sciamma wanted Floriane to illustrate the tragedy of great beauty - that that's all anyone sees of you, or all they're interested in; they all want a piece of you, and it makes you cynical and hard in defense.

Floriane is surely rather narcissistic, and shockingly callous to Marie, but she is also a really tragic figure. For once in her cold, isolated life she starts to feel something for another person, but then "quickly crawls right back into her shell", as Adele H wisely put it in an interview.
