Watched "Australia" on one of the movie channels.
Long film, around 150 mins, and I would have to say not Baz Luhrmann's best.
Similarities to his previous works like Moulin Rouge as far as cinematography goes, lots of CGI blended with the real landscape. Seemed to be filmed in the Kimberley region of Western Australia so I don't know why they even needed CGI, although it was hard to pinpoint where it was supposed to take place with references to the Kimberley, the Never Never, Arnhem Land and Darwin. That's an area half the size of Europe.
The storyline seemed like it was trying to tell too much and was a bit disjointed. Like a number of different writers just joining their sections together without much thought to continuity. Trying to combine the remoteness and isolation and its effect on Europeans, the relationship between the Aboriginal people and the Europeans, the trials of running a cattle station, the then government policy of removing half caste children into church missions, and the bombing of Darwin in the second world war.
As talented as they are the actors too stuggled for consistency, in particular Nicole Kidman who is usually first rate, seemed to fluctuate between farce and high drama. Lots of Australian stereotypes too. That's got to be down to Baz.
Having said all of those negative things I will admit that my opinions are coloured by having spent some time in the region. I will also say a lot of the people and events were quite believable, and that I did actually find most of the film to be enjoyable. Maybe a 5.5 out of 10.
